What do you do?

I analyse reams of information, pick out what’s important and put it into words that are simple, memorable and meaningful. Often, they also convince people to do something.

Why do you do it?

I love making knotty, convoluted copy say everything it needs to in a few well-chosen words. It’s therapeutic. Like ironing. Or is that just me?

Which projects have you worked on?

At Quietroom, I’ve written pensions letters for LV= and Sun Life of Canada, an investment guide for Accenture, copy for Lloyds Banking Group’s internal pensions website and an infographic for Whitbread that showed why apprentices are good for their business. I’ve worked on financial reports for Irish Life. And I made a miniscule contribution to the massive amount of work we produced for the British Steel Pension Scheme.

Which project are you most proud of?

I once visited Holloway Prison to interview women prison officers about why they joined the prison service and what they got out of their work. Every one of them loved their jobs. One told me she thought that, by comparison, every other job she’d done had been a waste of her life. It was emotional. The stories of genuine empathy we heard helped us create an award-winning, multi-media recruitment campaign that saw applications from women soar. And no, it didn’t discriminate against men.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?

A friend bought me three little books of ‘Hidden London Walks’. So recently I’ve been exploring different parts of the city and discovering how much of it I’ve been oblivious to – from its history and architecture to its rarefied specialist shops. I now know where to buy a top-notch judge’s wig if I ever need one.

Any hidden talents?

I can recite all the Books of the Old and New Testaments from memory. It’s amazing what they once taught eight-year-olds in rural Northern Ireland. No doubt this will be invaluable one day. I also have medals for skipping.
